An asymmetrical spinnaker (also called a cruising spinnaker or gennaker) is the easiest way to add speed and fun when the wind is behind you. We make them in 13 sizes, from a 23 ft luff for small trailer sailors up to a 57 ft luff for boats near 50 feet. The design work for each size is already done, and that saving goes into the price.

What is an asymmetrical spinnaker?

It is a light nylon downwind sail. The front edge (luff) is longer than the back edge (leech), and the front corner (tack) is fastened at the bow, so you fly it without a spinnaker pole. It is made for reaching and running in light to moderate wind, and it is easier to handle than a symmetrical spinnaker.

How much does a spinnaker cost?

Is it the same as a gennaker or a cruising spinnaker?

Mostly, yes. Sailors use "asymmetrical spinnaker", "asym", "cruising spinnaker", "cruising chute" and "gennaker" for this same kind of sail. A symmetrical spinnaker is different: both edges are the same length and it needs a pole.

Do I need a spinnaker pole?

No. The tack attaches at the bow with a tack line. If you have a roller-furling jib or genoa, our optional Tacker lets you set the spinnaker with the headsail still rolled up.

What size spinnaker fits my boat?

Type your boat model in "Find your spinnaker" at the top of this page and we show the size that fits. The size comes from your boat's rig measurements (I and J). If your boat is not listed, email us your I and J and we will tell you the size. The size chart on this page lists the luff, leech, foot and sail area of all 13 sizes.

What cloth do you use?

Challenge nylon spinnaker cloth: 0.75 ounce on Sizes 01 to 05 and 1.5 ounce on Sizes 06 to 13. Every spinnaker comes with a turtle bag and color-coded luff and leech tapes. Every spinnaker is sewn with Tenara thread.

Do I need a spinnaker sock?

For cruising and short-handed sailing, yes — a sock (also called a snuffer) is a long sleeve that slides down over the spinnaker to put it away and up to set it, and it makes hoisting and dousing much easier. You can add our premium sock to any size. For racing, skip the sock (it is heavy) and use the included launching turtle that comes with every spinnaker: a square racing bag with rail clips and Velcro closures that keep the head, tack and clew easy to reach.

What colors can I get?

Pick one of 12 standard color patterns on any size, or use "Build your own spinnaker" to choose the color of each panel. Custom colors at no extra cost.
